(Large Scale Autumn Paintings)
Richard Gray Gallery - Chicago
February 9 – March 31, 2006

An American figurative artist known for his paintings, sculptures, and prints. Since 1951, Katz's work has been the subject of more than 200 solo exhibitions and nearly 500 group exhibitions throughout the United States and internationally. He is well known for his large paintings, whose bold simplicity and heightened colors are considered as precursors to Pop Art.

As Guggenheim curator Katherine Brinson described:
“[One] might be surprised by the unbound rapture of the landscape paintings that have consumed much of the artist’s still-considerable energy in recent years. But [these works] are in fact the culmination of a lifelong artistic project that aspires to compress everything into ‘a single burst of energy… to paint it wide open.’”

Warm-up:

We will channel Katz's sentiment to “…compress everything into ‘a single burst of energy… to paint it wide open”’ in our warm-up exercise.

Think spontaneous, free, loose, carefree, using simple gestures and a limited palette. Please select images from the above Google search: Autumn Trees. Use these references if needed to warm-up in the spirit of Alex Katz.

Experiment with different materials: paint, oil pastels, soft pastels, markers, or pencils to see which yield the best results for you.

Project:

The project will be a continuation of what you explored during the warm-up.
