Yayoi Kusama (草間 彌生, Kusama Yayoi, born 22 March 1929) is a Japanese contemporary artist who works primarily in sculpture and installation, but is also active in painting, performance, film, fashion, poetry, fiction, and other arts. Her work is based in conceptual art and shows some attributes of feminism, minimalism, surrealism, Art Brut, pop art, and abstract expressionism, and is infused with autobiographical, psychological, and sexual content. She has been acknowledged as one of the most important living artists to come out of Japan. Wikipedia
We are returning to Yayoi Kusama, once again, as she has recently held an exhibition of works primarily completed within the last 2 years.
I was drawn to Kusama's beautiful, emotional, and colorful paintings. Please watch the video of this exhibition for My Eternal Soul below:
Warm-up
—
Please print a copy of the black and white photo of the sunflowers below.
We will all use the same image as a starting point to draw, paint, color, design, and alter in some way taking inspiration from Kusama. Use this time to rest and work in a peaceful, yet deliberate flow of expression.
Project
—
Your project may be a highly personal response to the ideas Kusama presented in her latest exhibition or simply a study in color, line, design, and movement.
I have included some nature photographs at the bottom of this page as additional inspiration if needed.
